In 2020, Lebanon became the first country in the Arab World to legalize the plant for medicinal export. The country is the 3rd largest producer of hashish globally, and has been illegally exporting the plant for decades. Up until 2020, the communities of the Bekaa Valley have been autonomously growing, cultivating and exporting Lebanese hashish to the world, and now big business and a scrambling government is looking for the opportunity to capitalise on this plant amidst the worst crises the country has ever been in. These film stills were shot on location as part of a film I co-produced for Vice News that you can watch below that explores the meeting of the black and white markets of the hashish industry in Lebanon.

Ali stands next to his pile of dried hashish at his warehouse in Yammouneh. Ali, a Cannabis farmer, has been in this industry his whole life. “We were born into this world…the legalization is not for my benefit. There no official institution in Lebanon they (the government) haven’t privatized and stolen, there’s only hashish left”.
